"We don't build these for the Street," Mr. Jobs said during a brief interview after presiding over the launch event at Apple headquarters here.

Apple Holds Prices on Laptops

Computer Maker Refreshes MacBook Lineup, Stays Away From Low End of Marke

TECHNOLOGY

OCTOBER 15, 2008

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Apple Inc. refreshed its laptop-computer line with aluminum models that use a new manufacturing process, but the company didn't decrease prices as much as anticipated ahead of what is expected to be a tough holiday selling season.

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs on Tuesday unveiled upgraded versions of its MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air notebook computers. The MacBook and MacBook Pro, which began shipping Tuesday, now have a casing made from a single piece of aluminum. Each also has a glass track pad that can handle multitouch gestures in a similar way to the iPhone.

The laptops also boast much faster graphics performance, which Apple attributed to switching to a new chip supplied by Nvidia Corp. from components made by Intel Corp. The circuitry is expected to help accelerate game software and help with chores like playing movies.

The new aluminum MacBook starts at $1,299, while the MacBook Pro starts at $1,999. Apple also said it would offer a basic, white entry-level MacBook for $999, $100 lower than before.

Some analysts had been expecting new models from Apple at around $800, targeting the fast-growing market for lower-end devices.

Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray & Co., said the pricing could indicate that Apple feels confident about demand despite economic concerns. Apple's stock has declined about 45% this year on worries that economic slowdowns in North America and Europe are beginning to effect Apple. The company's shares declined 5.6% to $104.08 in 4 p.m. composite trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced new versions of the MacBook Pro and MacBook laptop computers at an event at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California.

"We don't build these for the Street," Mr. Jobs said during a brief interview after presiding over the launch event at Apple headquarters here.

Analysts have said Apple sorely needed to upgrade its family of laptops -- its most crucial product line in terms of its immediate financial contribution. Apple's laptop sales reached $2.24 billion in its fiscal third quarter, which ended June 28. That represented 62% of the $3.61 billion in total Macintosh sales. Laptops brought in more revenue than any other business at Apple, exceeding the $1.68 billion in iPod sales and $419 million in iPhone sales for the quarter.

In the quarter through September, Apple shipped nearly 30% more PCs than it did a year earlier and increased its market share to 9.5% from 7.7%, research firm Gartner reported yesterday.

A combination of sleek industrial design and interest in the company's Mac operating system has helped Apple's Mac business outgrow the broader PC market by two to three times in recent quarters.
