==========正文============

Ponderosa, Bonanza Seek Relief

Two of the country's oldest family steakhouses, Ponderosa and Bonanza, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the latest casualty in a miserable year for the casual-dining business.

First formed in the 1960s, the two chains have an estimated 260 restaurants across the country, with each site averaging a little more than $1 million in annual sales, two people familiar with the matter said. The sites are concentrated in Midwest states including Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania.

Metromedia Steakhouses' Ponderosa and Bonanza chains filed for bankruptcy protection, in a tough year for the casual-dining business.

The chains' parent company, Metromedia Steakhouses Co., filed in federal bankruptcy court in Wilmington, Del. There are about 50 company-owned restaurants and 208 franchisees. Franchisees weren't included in the filing. It wasn't clear how many sites would close, though the company recently shuttered about 25 restaurants, according to a spokeswoman.

The filing listed assets of $1 million to $10 million and liabilities of $100 million to $500 million. Gordon Food Service and General Electric Co.'s GE Capital were listed as Metromedia Steakhouses' two largest creditors.

Metromedia Steakhouses said in a statement that it will "reorganize around its franchise operations and a profitable core of company-operated restaurants." The company said it has already received a debtor-in-possession financing commitment from one of its affiliates that now acts as a secured creditor. Such loans support a company while it is under bankruptcy protection.

Restaurants have been hit hard this year by falling consumer spending and rising food prices.

Plano, Texas-based Metromedia Steakhouse is a unit of billionaire John Kluge's Metromedia empire. Mr. Kluge purchased the two steakhouses in the 1980s. Metromedia also owned Bennigan's and Steak and Ale, which filed for Chapter 7 liquidation in late July.

Private-equity firm Atalaya Capital Management said Wednesday it received approval from a federal bankruptcy court in Texas to buy the Steak and Ale and Bennigan's brands.

Other large national chains that have filed for bankruptcy protection this year include Vicorp Restaurants Inc.'s Bakers Square and Village Inn and Buffets Inc.'s Old Country Buffet.
